Passionate about eco-responsible travel, Ben, founder of HumaGreen, is used to looking for alternatives to reduce his ecological footprint when traveling.
It was during his biggest trip, a year around the world sharing his adventures with more than 2,500 children for educational purposes, that he was confronted with a problem: waste and plastic consumption .
A global commonality
In each country, we find 1 common point: waste ! Whether at a viewpoint, on the beach, in the countryside or in towns/villages, we find them everywhere!
Generally, these are the most affected campaigns . Or rather every place where man passes, on foot or in vehicle.
And in the countryside, unlike towns and villages, no one goes to collect waste there.
Ben often recounts one of his memories from the island of Bali:
“As you head from one village to another, you see magnificent landscapes in the background!
But if you don't close your eyes and you are sensitive to the ecological cause, then you see in the foreground bottles of coke, sprite, water, plastic bags, straws, garbage bags, cigarettes, cups...
And that’s nothing compared to the beachfront and the waterways.”
How to combat this?
He had adopted the reflex of systematically picking up the waste he saw , taking care to be seen. He said that this could play on the collective unconscious .
That this could perhaps make this gesture a normal gesture in the future, and that leaving waste on the ground would be the gesture of shame ...
But there is a lot of work to get there. Especially in Asia where it would take half a day to collect waste from just 10 meters of roadside.
But then how to do it?
That's when Ben looked at the root of the problem: the consumption of consumable products .
Ultimately it comes down to going back to what we did before.
- Did you know that the first plastic bottles appeared in 1960?
- And the first plastic bags in 1957?
At this time, the consumables market became an opportunity. And so more and more things have become ephemeral, single-use products .
Today is a disaster!
So faced with this consumable marketing, Ben wants to combat it with ethical marketing and environmentally friendly products, making it possible to replace single-use products when traveling .
